Domains and hosting: a simple guide before publishing your site
Understand domains, hosting, safe launch checks and the questions to ask before choosing a plan.

A site on your own device is not automatically available to the public. Learn the difference between its address and the service that runs it.
The domain is the address
A domain such as example.com is the name visitors type. Registration usually has a recurring cost, which varies by extension and provider. Some services offer a free subdomain.
Hosting serves your site
Hosting delivers your files and may run server code and databases. A simple brochure site has different needs from a shop processing orders.
Choose for your needs
Check whether you need logins or orders, the limits and price of the plan, control over the account and domain, security and backup recovery.
Check before launch
Use HTTPS, test links and forms on mobile, and keep secrets out of browser files. Keep a backup outside the host. Plans and limits change, so confirm them with the provider.
